In a boost for the Midlands economy, Coventry has been named UK City of Culture 2021. The announcement was made by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, John Glen after Coventry beat four other cities that were in the running.
The title of UK City of Culture is awarded every four years by an independent panel of culture experts. There have been two previous UK Cities of Culture: Derry-Londonderry in 2013 and Hull in 2017. Both these cities have realised economic benefits such as increased investment and a rise in visitor numbers.
Coventry will now begin preparing its year-long programme of activity for 2021 which will include a Streets of Culture programme co-producing work in local communities. There were also be build-up events starting next year with the UK’s first Shop Front Theatre Festival taking place on 23-24th March 2018 and the city will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of its Cathedral. Coventry will have access to a £3m Heritage Lottery Fund grant as part of the winning package.
John Glen, Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, said:
